Dincharya

Dinacharya (दिनचर्या) is a concept in Ayurveda that refers to the daily routine or daily rhythm one should follow to maintain health, harmony, and balance in life. The term comes from Sanskrit:


  • “Dina” means day

  • “Charya” means routine or conduct


Purpose of Dinacharya:

Dinacharya aligns your lifestyle with nature’s cycles, especially the rhythms of the sun and moon, promoting:


  • Good digestion

  • Mental clarity

  • Strong immunity

  • Peaceful sleep

  • Balanced doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha)


A Typical Dinacharya (Daily Ayurvedic Routine):

1.Wake up during Brahma Muhurta (approx. 4:30–5:30 AM)


  • Ideal time for meditation, reflection, and connecting with higher energy


2.Elimination (Nature’s call)


  • Encouraged to empty bowels and bladder first thing after waking


3.Oral Hygiene


  • Tongue scraping (removes toxins)

  • Oil pulling (gargling with sesame/coconut oil)

  • Brushing teeth with herbal toothpaste


4.Abhyanga (Self oil massage)


  • Daily application of warm herbal oil improves circulation, calms the nervous system, and balances doshas


5.Bathing


  • Refreshes the body and removes oil and toxins


6.Exercise/Yoga


  • Light physical movement according to body type (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha)


7.Meditation & Pranayama


  • Calms the mind and breath, enhances mental clarity


8.Breakfast


  • Nourishing and suited to your constitution


9.Work /Duties


  • Ideally done during the Kapha-Pitta part of the day (10 AM–2 PM)


10.Lunch


  • Main meal of the day (between 12–1 PM) when digestive fire is strongest


11.Short Rest


  • Optional, ideally not lying flat; sitting or short walk preferred


12.Evening Wind Down


  • Light dinner by 7 PM, walk after meals


13.Night Routine


  • Calming activities (e.g., herbal tea, light reading)

  • Sleeping by 10 PM
